Print this page Set in the late 1800’s during the height of European colonialism, Anna and the King is a dramatic tale based on the diaries of Anna Leonowens. Anna is a British school teacher sent to Siam to teach the children of the royal family of King Mongkut. What unfolds is a story of love, devotion, and loyalty in a time of great uncertainty.
After the death of her husband, Anna and her son, Louis, struggle to find their place in the world. Upon arriving in Siam, Anna immediately feels a connection with the country, culture, and people of Siam. Her bold, and often outrageous behavior, eventually wins the heart of King Mongkut. He learns to value Anna’s opinions and honesty and quickly becomes enthralled with her.
Anna and King Mongkut develop a deep and trusting relationship that helps to pull Siam and the royal family through repeated attacks upon the country. British involvement is rumored, and Anna must choose where to place her loyalty. Anna follows her heart and remains with the royal family throughout their trials and tribulations. Anna and Louis find themselves becoming deeply attached to each and every member of the royal family.Anna and the King is an uplifting story of finding one another in a world of chaos. Anna Leonowens takes us on a wonderful journey of romance and adventure through the stories and characters in her diary. Learning to live again once tragedy has struck is a reoccurring theme throughout the movie – one which helps to define both Anna and King Mongkut.
