OFFICIAL WEBSITEPrint this page Billy Elliot tells the heart-warming tale of a young working class boy growing up in England. The movie explores the trials and tribulations he encounters on his journey to achieving greatness. Billy finds himself the odd-one-out in his family of coal mining men who enjoy boxing, wrestling and playing soccer. He can never really identify with this lifestyle and eventually stumbles across his talent while sitting in on a girl’s ballet class one afternoon. Billy finds in dance what has always been missing in his life: a connection to his deceased mother, a special hidden talent, and the zest to live again. Dance allows him the freedom to be himself and fills his soul with electricity.
Billy keeps his passion hidden from his family until his father discovers his secret one day. This only works to reconfirm his family’s suspicion that something is seriously wrong with Billy. Billy continues to practice and finds support and guidance from his dedicated ballet teacher. He must struggle to keep his family happy, but at the same time follow his heart. The ballet becomes Billy’s sole desire.
At first the ballet seems to further divide the family, but once Billy stands up to his father and proves to him that he can dance, ballet works as a unifying force. Everyone in the family suddenly believes that Billy may be a genius and does everything in their power to help him accomplish his dream: an audition at the Royal Ballet Academy in London. A broken family is mended by faith in one little boy’s dream and the power of the ballet.
Themes of courage, conviction and hope resonate throughout this movie in the actions of all the characters. Sure to bring tears to the eye and warmth to the heart, Billy Elliot proves that if you follow your dreams, nothing is impossible.
