Print this page During the Boer War between Great Britain and the Dutch colonists in South Africa, three Australian lieutenants, led by "Breaker" Morant, are ordered to execute a group of prisoners. As their duty demanded, they performed the execution, only to later learn one of the prisoners was actually a German citizen. In order to keep peace with Germany, the powers that be court martial Morant and his fellow soldiers.
What proceeds is a short and fuitle trial founded on trumped-up charges. The injustice done to the three serves one valuable purpose for the British: it relieves the higher-ups from being accused of war crimes, and keeps the peace. Two of the scapegoated lieutenants are sentenced to death, the third to life-in-prison. As soldiers, they have but one final duty for a nation that has betrayed them.
A compelling and tragic film, Breaker Morant is more significantly based on a true story. Yet it is the universal aspects of the film - the futility of war, the meaning of duty, and the strength of friendship - that give the film its real power.
