The Best Years of Our Lives is one of the most important films ever made about World War II. This was the first movie to feature a disabled actor (Harold Russell) in a major role. It was also the first to deal directly with intimacy issues between disabled and non-disabled people. Harold Russell went on to win the Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor and a special Academy Award® for "bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans. He is the only actor to win two Oscars for the same role.
