Viola Dees, a determined and resilient 89-year-old African American grandmother, struggles to raise her troubled 9-year-old grandson, Walter, in South Central Los Angeles. Shot cinema verite-style over 18 months, the film follows Viola and Walter through a period in which Viola suffers a heart attack, Walter accidentally sets fire to their home, and Viola must ultimately place Walter in a residential treatment facility. Through it all, the strength and warmth of their familial bond serve as a powerful counterpoint to their 80-year age difference and to the system that threatens to tear them apart.
