12 Angry Men is the story of a murder trial and the heated debate that ensues. One of 12 jurors holds out and insists his fellow jury members put aside personality conflicts and prejudices to thoroughly examine the case of a Spanish-American boy accused of killing his father. The defiant “Juror No. 8,” played by Henry Fonda, tries to delay an irrational ruling by forcing the group to consider if there is a “cause for reasonable doubt” of the boy’s accused guilt.
This Truly Moving Picture is a classic example of the wise old adage, “But above all, to thine own self be true.” This film is powerful because it shows how important it is to be objective and fair, even when these ideas are unpopular and the temptation of being swayed by the crowd is real and acute. It is also intriguing to witness the “datedness” of 12 Angry Men and reflect on how much past prejudices have changed and influenced our culture.
